Why Do Babies Need Osteopathy?

Birth — even an uncomplicated one — is one of the most physically demanding events a baby goes through. As a baby navigates the birth canal, their head and body are subjected to significant compression forces. In longer labours, or births involving forceps or vacuum, these forces are even greater.

Sometimes, this compression leaves traces in the baby's body — tension patterns in the skull, spine, or digestive system that can manifest as colic, difficulty feeding, a preference to turn one way, or a developing flat spot on the head.

Pediatric osteopathy uses extremely gentle, hands-on techniques to identify and release these tension patterns — helping your baby's nervous system, digestion, and musculoskeletal system settle into healthy function.

The techniques are so light, many babies sleep right through their session.

Conditions We Treat

Every baby is unique. Our osteopath tailors each session to your baby's specific presentation and age.

🍼 Infant Colic

Persistent crying for >3 hours/day, >3 days/week. Osteopathy addresses diaphragm, digestive, and cranial tension that contributes to colic — often with results in 1-3 sessions.

↩️ Reflux & GER

Gastro-oesophageal reflux from diaphragm tension and vagal nerve compression. Gentle release can improve digestion and reduce painful regurgitation.

🔵 Flat Head (Plagiocephaly)

Positional flat spots from preferred head position or skull compression at birth. Cranial osteopathy + home positioning advice. Most effective before 6 months.

↔️ Torticollis

Tight neck muscles causing baby to prefer turning one way. Can cause flat head and feeding difficulties. Gentle cervical release restores balanced mobility.

🍶 Feeding Difficulties

Difficulty latching, tiring quickly during feeds, clicking sounds. Often related to jaw, tongue, and neck tension that osteopathy can address alongside lactation support.

😴 Sleep Difficulties

Overtired, overstimulated babies who can't settle. Osteopathic treatment calms the nervous system and reduces physical tension — helping babies rest more easily.

Newborn Assessment

Even healthy, uncomplicated births create compression forces. Many parents bring babies in within the first week for a preventive assessment and release.

Care for Every Stage of Childhood

Pediatric osteopathy isn't just for newborns. We see patients from birth through teenage years — and every stage in between.

Newborns (0-4 weeks)

Birth compression, colic assessment, feeding support, cranial release.

Infants (1-12 months)

Colic, reflux, flat head, torticollis, developmental delays, sleep.

Toddlers (1-3 years)

Falls and bumps, postural habits, recurring ear infections, gait patterns.

Children (3-10 years)

Sports injuries, growing pains, scoliosis screening, headaches, ADHD support.

Pre-Teens & Teens

Postural correction (screen time), sports performance, chronic pain, anxiety.

What Happens at a Baby's Osteopathy Session?

Please note: Sessions are designed to be calm and baby-led. If baby is hungry, feed them first. If baby falls asleep, that's perfect — many babies sleep through treatment. Bring their blanket, soother, and anything that helps them feel comfortable.

1

Birth History & Parent Intake (15 min)

We start with a detailed conversation about your pregnancy, labour, delivery, and baby's behaviour since birth. This context is essential — it tells us where to look.

2

Gentle Assessment (10 min)

With baby comfortable (often being held by you or lying on the table), we assess their skull shape, neck mobility, spinal alignment, and overall tone. We watch how they move, turn, and respond.

3

Hands-On Treatment (25-35 min)

Using the gentlest possible touch — often no more than the weight of a coin — we work on cranial plates, the sacrum, spine, and digestive organs. Baby can be held by you throughout if preferred.

4

Home Exercises & Positioning (10 min)

We'll show you tummy time progressions, neck stretches, or carrying positions to support the changes between sessions.

5

Follow-Up Plan

We'll recommend a realistic schedule based on what we found — most babies need 3-6 sessions. We'll check progress at each visit and adjust as baby responds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is osteopathy safe for newborns?
Yes. Pediatric osteopathy for newborns uses only the lightest touch — often described as the weight of a coin. There are no cracking, twisting, or high-force movements. Many babies sleep through their entire session. We have specific training in pediatric and neonatal osteopathic techniques.
Can osteopathy really help with colic?
Osteopathy is one of the most evidence-supported complementary approaches for infantile colic. Colic often involves tension in the diaphragm, digestive tract, and cranial base from birth. Gentle osteopathic release of these structures can significantly reduce crying episodes. Many parents notice meaningful improvement within 1-3 sessions — though every baby is different.
How early can I bring my baby?
From the very first day of life. Many parents bring their babies within the first week. The sooner tension patterns are addressed, the easier they are to resolve — especially for things like flat head (plagiocephaly), which is most responsive before 4-6 months.
How many sessions does a baby typically need?
Most babies need 3-6 sessions, spaced 1-2 weeks apart. Some respond very quickly (1-2 sessions for mild cases). Others with more complex presentations benefit from ongoing monthly check-ins. We give you a realistic estimate after the first assessment.
Does my pediatrician need to refer us?
No referral is needed. You can book directly. We do recommend letting your pediatrician know you're exploring osteopathic care — and we always work alongside your medical team, not instead of it.
Is it covered by insurance?
Many extended health benefit plans cover osteopathic manual practice (OMP) for all ages, including infants. Check your plan details. We provide receipts for submission. Note: OHIP does not cover osteopathy.
