Your Body After Birth

Whether you had a vaginal birth or a C-section, your body went through profound change. During pregnancy, relaxin softened your ligaments. During birth, your pelvis expanded, your pelvic floor worked intensely, and your spine and ribs supported the entire process.

Postpartum recovery is rarely as simple as "your body bounces back." Many women carry tension, misalignment, and structural imbalances for months or even years after birth — often dismissed as "normal" when they're actually very treatable.

Postpartum osteopathy addresses the musculoskeletal consequences of birth through gentle, hands-on manual treatment. We work with the whole body — pelvis, sacrum, spine, ribcage, pelvic floor, abdominal fascia — to support genuine healing.

You don't have to just "live with it." Pelvic pain, back pain, and pelvic floor dysfunction all respond well to osteopathic care — often in just 3-6 sessions.

Common Postpartum Complaints We Treat:

  • ✓ Lower back and sacral pain
  • ✓ Pelvic girdle pain persisting post-birth
  • ✓ Coccyx (tailbone) pain from birth
  • ✓ Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • ✓ Neck and shoulder pain from feeding
  • ✓ Carpal tunnel / wrist pain
  • ✓ Rib pain and thoracic tension
  • ✓ Postpartum headaches

Conditions We Treat in Detail

Every birth is different. Every recovery is different. We meet you where you are.

🦴 Sacral & Coccyx Pain

The sacrum and coccyx (tailbone) absorb significant force during birth. Osteopathic realignment of the sacrum and surrounding tissues resolves pain that can persist for months.

🦵 Pelvic Floor Support

Osteopathy addresses the musculoskeletal and fascial framework supporting the pelvic floor. Works beautifully alongside pelvic floor physiotherapy. Great for prolapse support, urinary urgency, and pain.

💪 Feeding Posture Pain

Hours of nursing create repetitive strain on neck, shoulders, and upper back. We release thoracic tension, address forward head posture, and reduce wrist/carpal tunnel strain from holding baby.

🌊 Pelvic Girdle Pain

PGP that begins during pregnancy sometimes persists postpartum. Hormonal changes (relaxin stays elevated while breastfeeding) keep joints hypermobile. Osteopathy stabilizes and realigns.

🧠 Postpartum Headaches

Dehydration, sleep deprivation, and cervical tension all contribute to postpartum headaches. Cranial and cervical work provides relief without medication.

Hormonal & Fatigue Support

Osteopathic treatment supports the autonomic nervous system — helping your body shift out of chronic stress/survival mode into rest, recover, and nourish mode.

When to Start — Postpartum Recovery Timeline

Every mother's recovery timeline is unique, but here's a general guide:

2-3 Weeks Post Vaginal Birth

First session can begin — focusing on sacral realignment, pelvic tension release, and cranial work. Light and supportive, not deep tissue. Many new moms report feeling noticeably better after just one session.

6-8 Weeks Post C-Section

Once your incision is fully healed, we can begin gentle scar tissue work. The earlier you start scar mobilization, the easier it is — adhesions become denser over time.

2-4 Months Postpartum

Good window for deeper structural work as tissues have stabilized but before patterns become chronic. Pelvic alignment, diastasis support, and thoracic work.

6-12 Months & Beyond

It's never too late. Many women come in 1-2 years postpartum for lingering issues. Scar work, chronic back pain, pelvic floor dysfunction — all very treatable even months to years later.

Bring your baby! We're entirely baby-friendly. Feed, settle, and carry your baby as needed throughout your session. We'll work around your little one.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start postpartum osteopathy?
As early as 2-3 weeks after a vaginal birth, or 6-8 weeks after C-section (once your incision is healed and your OB has cleared you). Don't wait until you're in significant pain — earlier treatment means faster, easier recovery.
Can osteopathy help with C-section recovery?
Yes — this is one of the most impactful things you can do after a C-section. Scar tissue from the incision can create fascial restrictions that affect the bladder, uterus, bowel, and lower back. Gentle scar mobilization (once healed) breaks down adhesions and restores mobility. Many women notice significant improvement in pulling sensations, sensitivity, and related back pain in just 2-3 sessions.
Is this the same as pelvic floor physiotherapy?
They're different but complementary. Pelvic floor physiotherapy (PFP) uses internal examination and specific exercises to rehabilitate the pelvic floor muscles. Osteopathy addresses the broader structural and fascial context — how the pelvis, sacrum, spine, and diaphragm influence pelvic floor function. Many patients benefit from both — and we're happy to co-treat alongside your pelvic floor physio.
Can I breastfeed my baby during the appointment?
Absolutely. We completely support breastfeeding on demand. Bring your baby, your nursing pillow, your soother — whatever you need. Your comfort is our priority.
How many postpartum sessions will I need?
Most postpartum patients benefit from 3-6 sessions over 2-3 months. Many notice meaningful changes after just 1-2 sessions. We'll give you a clear estimate at your initial consultation based on your specific presentation.
Is osteopathy covered by insurance postpartum?
Many extended health benefit plans cover osteopathic manual practice (OMP) for postpartum patients — the same as any other osteopathy visit. Check with your benefits provider. We provide receipts for submission. OHIP does not cover osteopathy.
