What Is Prenatal Osteopathy?

Prenatal osteopathy is a form of hands-on, manual therapy that addresses the musculoskeletal changes your body undergoes during pregnancy. As your baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts, your ligaments soften (thanks to the hormone relaxin), and your spine, pelvis, and ribcage must continually adapt.

Our registered DOMP uses gentle, specific techniques to ease tension, restore joint mobility, and support your nervous system — all without medication, and all adapted to your stage of pregnancy.

Prenatal osteopathy is safe from the first trimester through to the final weeks of pregnancy. Many of our patients also continue with postpartum osteopathy after birth to support recovery.

In Your Session, We Address:

  • ✓ Lower back and sacral pain
  • ✓ Pelvic girdle pain (PGP/SPD)
  • ✓ Round ligament tightness
  • ✓ Sciatica along the leg
  • ✓ Rib and thoracic tension
  • ✓ Carpal tunnel symptoms
  • ✓ Hip and SI joint discomfort
  • ✓ Pubic symphysis dysfunction
  • ✓ Optimal fetal positioning
  • ✓ General pregnancy tension

Common Pregnancy Conditions We Treat

Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding experiences a body goes through. Osteopathy supports your body in adapting gracefully.

Lower Back Pain

The most common pregnancy complaint. Increased lumbar lordosis and weight distribution shift put strain on your lower spine.

Pelvic Girdle Pain

Affecting the SI joints and pubic symphysis, PGP causes difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or rolling in bed.

Sciatica

Sharp, radiating pain from the lower back down one leg. Common as the growing uterus puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Round Ligament Pain

Sharp, stabbing groin pain from stretching of the round ligaments supporting the uterus — very common in the second trimester.

Rib & Thoracic Pain

As baby grows and occupies more space, ribs splay and thoracic mobility decreases, causing mid-back and rib discomfort.

Optimal Fetal Positioning

Gentle pelvic and uterine ligament work in the third trimester to support space for baby to find ideal positioning for birth.

Carpal Tunnel

Swelling during pregnancy can compress the median nerve, causing tingling, numbness, and pain in the hands and wrists.

Headaches & Neck Tension

Postural changes and stress during pregnancy contribute to cervical tension and headaches. Gentle cranial work provides relief.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first prenatal osteopathy session is 60-75 minutes. Here's exactly what happens.

1

Detailed Health History (15 min)

We begin with a thorough intake — pregnancy history, current symptoms, your birth plan, and any concerns. We want to understand your whole picture, not just your pain point.

2

Postural Assessment (10 min)

We gently assess your posture, spinal curves, pelvic alignment, and how your body is adapting to pregnancy. This guides the treatment plan.

3

Gentle Hands-On Treatment (30-40 min)

Using soft tissue techniques, joint mobilization, fascial release, and gentle cranial work — all adapted for pregnancy. You'll be positioned comfortably (side-lying, semi-reclined — never face down after the first trimester).

4

Home Care Recommendations (5-10 min)

We'll share specific stretches, positioning advice, and postural tips to extend the benefit of your session between visits.

5

Personalized Treatment Plan

We'll recommend how many sessions make sense for your specific presentation and stage of pregnancy — no generic protocols, just what's right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is prenatal osteopathy safe during all trimesters?
Yes — prenatal osteopathy is safe and gentle throughout all three trimesters. Treatment is always modified based on your stage and comfort. We use no high-velocity manipulation during pregnancy; all techniques are gentle, hands-on, and evidence-informed.
When in pregnancy should I start?
You can begin at any point. Many patients start in the first trimester when discomforts first appear. Earlier is generally better — treating issues proactively prevents them from becoming chronic patterns your body carries into postpartum recovery.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients benefit from 3-6 sessions during pregnancy. We often recommend once monthly in the first and second trimesters, increasing to every 2-3 weeks in the third trimester as your body changes most rapidly. We'll create a personalized plan at your initial consultation.
Does insurance cover prenatal osteopathy?
Many extended health benefit plans in Canada cover osteopathic manual practice (OMP). Check with your employer benefits or insurance provider for your coverage details. We can provide a receipt for submission. We recommend confirming coverage before your first appointment.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing you can easily move in — yoga pants, leggings, and a comfortable top work well. Our treatment tables are adjustable and designed for comfort at all stages of pregnancy.
Can I see you the same week as seeing my OB or midwife?
Yes — osteopathy complements your prenatal care team. We often work alongside midwives, OBs, physiotherapists, and chiropractors. We encourage you to keep your existing care providers informed of any new treatments.

Continue Your Care Journey

Osteopathic care doesn't stop at birth. Many of our prenatal patients continue with postpartum care — and bring their babies in for pediatric treatment too.

Postpartum Osteopathy

Recovery support after birth — pelvic floor, scar tissue, and whole-body restoration.

Pediatric Osteopathy

Gentle care for babies from day one — colic, reflux, flat head, and more.
